The Mineral Area College English Department hosted its sixth annual Word Fest on Friday, March 23. High school students, teachers, and parents from Valley R-VI, Farmington R-7, and Potosi R-III schools were in attendance, as well as members of the MAC community.

The event included a writing contest for 9th- through 12th-grade students, critical thinking language-building activities, lunch, and a presentation on media literacy by Dr. Nick Kremer of the University of Missouri. During his presentation, “[Re]Writing Reality: Understanding How Advertisements Are Designed, Kremer discussed the influence advertising designs have on audiences, specifically teens.” He examined a variety of popular culture ads, noting, “There are no accidents in art,” as he deconstructed the ads during his presentation.
