The Lambda Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Mineral Area College (MAC) recently attended the 2025 Heartland Region Fall Conference. The event was held on October 17–18, 2025, at Butler Community College in Andover, Kansas.

The two-day conference offered a wealth of opportunities for academic and professional development for the MAC delegation. Highlights of the conference included:

  • A College Fair connecting students with transfer opportunities.
  • A compelling virtual presentation on the Future of AI delivered by Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa.
  • Engaging breakout sessions covering topics like Leadership Development, Scholarships, Membership Recruitment, and the 5 Star Chapter Development Plan.
  • MAC PTK President and Heartland Regional Officer Carly Saunders led two sessions, Campus Project and Fundraising, and was instrumental in planning the conference agenda.
  • Members participated in mock Chapter meetings to sharpen their organizational and parliamentary skills.
  • An inspirational closing address was given by Dan Meers, who has served as the beloved KC Wolf mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs for 35 years.
  • The chapter also contributed to a good cause by participating in the Scholar Glow Dash 5K, a fundraiser dedicated to providing Golden Opportunity Scholarships that help students cover their PTK membership fees.

Lambda Chapter advisor Alison Sheets said attending the Heartland Region Conference provided invaluable training and motivation for the chapter members.  The experience strengthened their commitment to PTK's hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship, and prepared them to be even more effective leaders at MAC.

"I especially enjoy watching our members network with students from other Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska community colleges,” Sheets added. “Like MAC, these community colleges include international students from all over the world. Our students gain worldly awareness and empathy when they befriend students from different cultural backgrounds."

It’s not too late to join PTK and benefit from these outstanding opportunities! To learn more about eligibility, please contact Alison Sheets at 573-518-3848 or asheets@MineralArea.edu.
