New! Associate of Fine Arts in Music

Take your next step to a music career with our new AFA in Music degree!

Designed exclusively for aspiring music majors, this program offers two years of comprehensive training, including core music classes and electives that are standard in university music programs, and transfer-ready general education courses, all at an affordable price. MAC’s AFA in Music provides the essential groundwork for a seamless transition to a four-year institution.

Music Classes

  • Appreciation of Music
  • Appreciation of Jazz
  • History and Form of Rock Music
  • Music Theory I, II, III, IV
  • Aural Skills I, II, III, IV
  • Piano Skills I, II
  • Applied Lessons I, II, III, IV
    One-on-one lessons in Voice, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Guitar, Bass, Piano, Jazz, and Composition

These two ensembles are open to all college students regardless of major:

  • MAC Singers
    A concert choir (SATB) comprised of college students.
  • Chamber Singers
    An auditioned, small vocal group (12-16 college students) who specialize in madrigals, pop, and close-harmony jazz.

 

The following ensembles can be taken by MAC students for college credit or for a small fee by high school students and the community through MAFAA:

  • Concert Band
    A full size concert band comprised of college/high school students and community members.
  • Jazz Combo
    Small group jazz focusing on soloing and jazz improvisation.
  • Jazz Ensemble
    Large jazz ensemble (Big Band) setting comprised of college/high school students and community members.
  • Guitar Ensemble
    A group consisting specifically of guitars (plus other strings) performing as an ensemble.
  • Community Singers
    A large choir (SATB) comprised of college/high school students and community members.

 

These two musical groups are free and can be joined by anyone who fits the instrumentation:

  • Pep Band
    A raucous musical ensemble providing music and entertainment for specific home basketball games.
  • Pit Orchestra
    The orchestra/band that performs as accompaniment for three major MAFAA musicals each year.

MAC partners with Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy (MAFAA) to give students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds access to fine arts instruction. MAFAA offers group classes, private lessons, and large ensembles for a variety of ages and skill levels. Visit MAFineArts.org for more information.

Scholarships

The MAC Music Department offers scholarships to all students, both music majors and non-music majors. Scholarships are based on audition and are open to vocalists or instrumentalists. Auditions take place every spring.
