Bob Monks Honored with MCCA Community College Partner Award
Bob Monks, of Desloge, was presented with the Community College Partner Award at the Annual Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) Convention in St. Charles, MO, on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
The award recognizes individuals who establish significant partnerships with their local community college to support students, programs, and economic activity. Mineral Area College (MAC) nominated Monks for his deep, sustained commitment to the fine arts.
Monks’ most critical contribution occurred in 2020. Facing significant fiscal challenges, MAC temporarily discontinued its fine arts programs (theatre, instrumental, and vocal music). Monks spearheaded a community effort to establish the Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy (MAFAA) as a non-profit organization.
Serving as President and CEO, Monks ensured MAFAA provided continuous fine arts instruction and performance opportunities in the service region from spring 2021 until this summer, when the organization’s success led to its official integration into MAC as an official college program
Monks’ work with MAFAA established a crucial partnership that continues to support MAC’s institutional mission and cultural standing in southeastern Missouri:
- Program Preservation and Growth: While instrumental and vocal music have since returned to MAC, MAFAA acts as a vital feeder organization, preparing students who later enroll in college programs. Monks’ advocacy also supported the creation of MAC's Associate of Fine Arts in Music degree program.
- Community Engagement: He fostered strong connections and garnered significant financial support that has elevated MAC’s reputation as a cultural hub for the region.
- Inspiring Volunteerism: Beyond his leadership and fundraising success, Mr. Monks actively participates in MAFAA instrumental performances, playing his signature trumpet, showcasing a personal dedication that inspires both students and the community.
MAC President Dr. Joe Gilgour said that Monks' dedication, demonstrated through his leadership, fundraising efforts, and personal participation in performances, makes him an exceptionally deserving recipient of the MCCA Community College Partner Award.
“When our fine arts programs were at risk, Bob didn't just stand by—he built a solution. The creation of MAFAA ensured that these vital cultural and educational opportunities remained available to our community,” Gilgour said. “His work has left a profound legacy that has now resulted in the official integration of MAFAA back into the college, strengthening our offerings for decades to come. We’re proud to have him as a partner.”
