MAC Nursing Students Collected Sock Caps for Missouri Veterans

MAC Student Nurses Association set out to help our Missouri and homeless veterans through a local Sock Cap Drive.

Betty Arnold, currently the Department Chief of Staff and president of local VFW Auxilary #2210 in Ste. Genevieve, stated earlier this year that our Missouri Veterans needed sock caps for the upcoming winter months. Many of these veterans are also undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments, and they have a hard time keeping their heads warm.

A definite need has been established for the caps – residents enjoy stepping outside and those caps will keep them warm and cozy!

MAC Student Nurses Association club members were honored to help our local and statewide veterans. With the help of the surrounding communities, the club collected 779 sock caps that will go directly to local veterans in nursing homes (Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Madison, Jefferson, and surrounding counties), veterans’ homes, and hospitals.

“I was amazed to see the number of sock caps collected and excited to see the enthusiasm of the students who met for the photo and assisted in getting the caps to my vehicle," said Arnold. "I messaged a couple of my friends on this great project, and before I arrived in Ste. Genevieve had 3 responses – 100 of the sock caps will go to the Warrenton area for a Homeless Veteran Distribution; 200 sock caps will be used at Jefferson Barracks Hospital for patients and for a Homeless Veterans’ Project organized by a Farmington Auxiliary member; 30 of the smaller sock caps will be given to a teacher who teaches first grade in the inner St. Louis City schools for her students – I know this may not be directly veteran-related, but as Esther said 'children need to keep warm too' (this teacher spends so much of her salary on buying things for her underprivileged students and was so grateful for the caps). THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!"
